The 10 best restaurants in Lisbon

Lisbon is an ancient abode of rich Portuguese cuisine with its own special traditions and culinary recipes, which is famous for its abundance of fish and seafood dishes. Where, if not in restaurants, to get acquainted with the peculiarities of the gastronomic culture of the capital of Portugal? We present the TOP-10 of the best restaurants in Lisbon, each of which has its own exceptional zest that distinguishes it from hundreds of others. Restaurante Eleven Restaurant is located in downtown Lisbon, surrounded by the lush vegetation of Eduardo VII Park. Huge panoramic windows offer beautiful views of the city and the Tagus River. It is especially nice to dine at a table by the window when Lisbon is spectacularly flooded with evening lights. Beautiful curtains, snow-white tablecloths, soft light, music – everything here has a good rest. No less attractive menu. Michelin-starred Chef at Joachim Koerper Restaurant appreciates traditional Portuguese cuisine and prepares exclusively original dishes. For example, assorted fish caught in the Atlantic Ocean in different parts of Portugal: continental, on the Azores and Madeira Island (cost – 46 €). The restaurant has a tasting menu (115 €), Atlantic (94 €) and lobster. In the latter, as you might guess, the appetizer, soup and main course are made from lobster. Cost – 175 € per person. In different types of the menu of the Eleven restaurant there is an original dish – “stone soup”. The chef was inspired by the old Portuguese legend of a pilgrim monk who was once in a strange house, where they had not guessed to feed him. Then he asked to bring a stone to make soup, then bacon or chorizo, potatoes and beans to improve the taste of the “stone” soup. So a tasty hearty dish “made of stone” was born.
BaixaMar Lisboa – Mariscos e Petiscos The relatively new fish restaurant in Lisbon, which opened in the summer of 2018, has already become popular with both tourists and residents. Visitors are greeted by the hospitable host himself, and friendly waiters are happy to help make the choice. The menu is dominated by seafood and fish dishes. Prices are average. The real pride of the restaurant is an octopus with mashed potatoes, salad and olives (17.5 €), oysters (3 € apiece), cod from the Chef (18.5 €). Average bill – 80-100 € per
Alma This is one of the Michelin-starred restaurants in Lisbon, most recently (in November 2018), which received a second star thanks to its equally famous chef Henrique Sá Pessoa. The restaurant is located in an old building of the XVIII century, but it opened in 2009. The interior is dominated by walnut, the room is decorated with paintings by contemporary artists, several mirrors and racks with a collection of fine wines. The restaurant has two halls, each of which is separated from the kitchen by a glass wall, so that you can watch the truly virtuosic and impressive actions of the cooks. Particular attention is given to the kitchen of the restaurant. Its basis is classic Portuguese dishes in a new arrangement. Perfectly matched wine list. A tasting menu from a chef with 5 dishes costs 110 €, a fish menu – 120 €.
The very first Michelin star in Lisbon was received back in 2013 by the Belcanto restaurant with chef Jose Avilles, and in 2015 he became the owner of 2 stars and kept them to this day. In total, in the capital of Portugal in 2019, 5 Michelin-starred restaurants.
Topo The restaurant-bar is located on the roof of the Centro Ethnic Shopping Center in Lisbon’s Plaza de Martim Moniz. This is a cozy restaurant with beautiful city views. The terrace offers views of the picturesque quarters of the Castelo district, the narrow, steep streets of Mouraria, the Church of Grasse and the ancient castle of Alfama. The cuisine is international, perhaps because many visiting guests from different countries live in this area. There are also traditional Portuguese dishes, for example, À Brás de Bacalhau, the Portuguese favorite cod with fried potatoes and olives (15 €). For dessert, you can choose a lemon cake (4 €). After dinner, enjoy the views while sipping a cocktail or rich Portuguese wine.
Mar Ao Carmo This seafood restaurant is located in the historic center of Lisbon, with a spacious terrace overlooking the ruins of the Convento do Carmo Monastery and a small patio with an aquarium at the entrance. Here you can watch the lobsters and crabs, which will then follow into the kitchen. In addition, there is a counter with different types of fish, oysters and shrimp. The menu contains traditional seafood dishes: inexpensive oysters – 2 € apiece, a mix of grilled seafood – 110 € for two servings.
